Looking for some family fun this weekend? Then head over and enjoy the humor of “The Kidnapping Kraze.” The story is based around the kidnapping of Courtney.
Of course, what the other characters in the play don’t realize is that Courtney and her best friend Elizabeth were the masterminds of the kidnapping scheme.
According to first-time director, Dave Cook of Methuen, this play is a wacky comedy, fit for the whole family.
“When I picked this play, I wanted (to use) a mix of adults and children,” said the 48-year-old. “It’s worked out really great and the interacting between them is awesome.”
With local actors from the towns of Andover, North Andover and Methuen, and with the children actors ranging in age from 11 to 17, Cook believes “I got really lucky with having these 13 members of the cast.”
Cook, who started acting when he was 45, said that he enjoyed controlling the whole flow of the show as director.
“The most challenging thing is getting children to understand comedic timing,” said Cook. “They have come a long way. When I first started I was concerned, but they are learning about timing issues. They’re getting it, and it’s really fun to watch.”
Comedic timing and a building and organizing a set is only part of what makes a good cast, said Cook.
“We have really funny, good, talented people,” he said. “We have been rehearsing, for almost three months and we do four plays a year.”
With all the rehearsal time, the cast has the opportunity to really work on the show and make the play a piece of art.
“We have such a good time in a (comedy) like this, as opposed to a drama,” Cook said. “We can change the play or come up with something new every rehearsal and we do. In fact we may even change parts of the play each night.”
