In its 21st year, the Lowell Summer Music Series is featuring some big-name performers, including artists such as Lyle Lovett, the B-52’s and Cake.
“We have been growing the stature of the artists and the quality of performers,” said Peter Aucella, programming director for the series. “The bigger names define the character of the summer series.”
The Lowell Summer Music Series kicks off on Friday, June 25 with two-time Grammy winner and blues legend the Taj Mahal Trio at Boarding House Park in Lowell.
There is something for the kids, too, with the 2010 Free Fun For Kids Series, including 10 free weekday morning programs, presented by The Lowell National Historical Park and the Lowell Festival Foundation.
“Starting July 7, every Wednesday and Thursday morning, from 10 a.m. to noon, there are crafts and a stage show,” Aucella said. “By noon, there are trolleys standing by and the kids can get a free trolley ride.”
Organizing the performers is a year-round effort.
“After our last show in mid-September, we are refining our lists of performers by October, and by November there have been offers made to the performers for the next year’s summer series,” Aucella said.
He said there is a whole group of other venues in the northeast who have a booking network, so when the Lowell series wants to bring in a popular act, the other venues can offer additional dates in the area.
“We have our online survey, which is really where we can find out who generates excitement and who doesn’t,” Aucella said. “A lot of the acts you’re seeing here are at lower prices than at other places. I think the followers of each act appreciate getting the acts at a great ticket price.”
The summer series also offers a nice way for families to spend time together.
“We’re giving folks a nice, quality summer, with blues, folk and rock,” Aucella said. “Bring your own lawn chair and a picnic.”
At Boarding House Park, there is a designated area for chairs and blankets. No alcohol is allowed.
“Kids 12 and under get into any show free,” Aucella said. “It’s how we grew up as a series.”
